WHO WE ARE
Hi! Thanks for stopping by. It's lovely to meet you, I'm Maddie and I'm the artist, designer and general dogsbody behind Also the Bison. I'm involved from the first brushstroke of a design all the way along to packaging up your orders and sending them to you.
William Morris once said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
Inspired by this, in 2016 I quit my job in the fashion industry, disillusioned with creating things that were designed to be disposable and harmful to the planet. I founded Also the Bison to challenge what sustainable looks like. I try to emulate William Morris’ view of the world as I work, aiming to capture the curiosity and wonder of the age of exploration that he lived in, inspired by the care taken to collect and record everything from the smallest insect to the greatest mechanical contraptions of the time.
I am also just as passionate about ensuring that our products are created ethically. I work with other small businesses in the UK and Sweden to print our designs, who care just as much about their employees and the environment as I do. Everything is made from the finest natural, recycled and FSC certified materials.
So you can be sure that no bison are harmed in the making of our products, directly or indirectly.
Every one of our prints starts with hand-painted and hand-drawn elements. My favourite media are watercolours, inks and my trusty mechanical pencil. Each element is then scanned in to my computer where I collage them together into a riot of colour. Watch the beginnings of the Fungi design below:
Along with being featured in The Evening Standard, we've been fortunate enough to be stocked worldwide, from Switzerland to The Falkland Islands as well as in a number of Heritage locations across the UK including custom ranges we designed for The Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums.
We're always happy to hear from customers and potential stockists! The best way to get in touch is via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
